Design

Our immersive VR world for the Partition of India, was largely a historically accurate one.

We used strong anchors like a British India passport and a train as powerful metaphors for identity and displacement. Each element in our scenes were central to conveying the emotional weight of the era and its impact on personal lives.

Development

Utilizing a unique workflow, we incorporated AI tools to transform archival footage into 3D assets, which were then integrated into the VR world using Unity. Additionally we used custom scripts to add dynamic lighting and camera movement to each scene.

This approach enabled a vivid and accurate reconstruction of historical environments for an immersive experience.

Concept

Viewers witness first hand a recurring nightmare of Ibrahim Khan, a Muslim man from pre-partitioned India. By exploring his abandoned home after he is forced to flee from Amritsar to Lahore, we experience the chaos and urgency with which millions of people migrated over the India-Pakistan border in a matter of weeks, leading to one of the largest and bloodiest mass migrations in the history of mankind.

This project combines historical artifacts accurate for the time, along with archival footage and news media from 1947 to highlight the deep contradiction between the fantasy of freedom and the stark reality of turmoil, violence, upheaval and displacement.

"The walls of this house are etched with memories which will long be forgotten in the pursuit of a promised dream. The future is uncertain."
